I recently got a chance to sit down with The Hii Hatts and talk to them a bit about the forming of their group, the upcoming show at The Key Club, and some of the experiences they’ve had along the way. Check out what I.N.F, Paddi Stone, and Kiid Cam have to say about experience and the value of professionalism.
Sondria: Let’s talk about experience; The Hii Hatts have already had some that very few people can say they’ve had. You’ve played the House of Blues and the Whiskey, you’ve put out a killing pop album—“Geek’d”, and now you have an upcoming show with The Cool Kids and PacDiv in Hollywood. Can you talk to the people a bit about your experiences along the way? What’s changed in your organization? And what has changed in the way you work, both creatively and professionally?
(There is a brief silence while each member of the group points at the other to tackle the first question. I.N.F decides to take it.)
I.N.F.: The work ethic is amazing now because we know each other better.
When we first started out I knew Paddi a little bit and I didn’t know Cam at all so the music wasn’t as developed. But when we started being around each other more, and hanging out and stuff, the music started coming out really good. And now we’re at an even different height since we’ve been on stage [together] at the Blues and at The Whiskey, it’s a whole different look at it now. Now we’re looking at worldwide press.
Kiid Cam: Yeah, I can definitely agree with that. Things have changed since the beginning…we all came together and just put out this amazing shit and it was amazing to everybody else [like] it was amazing to us. We were all brand new together. As INF said, I was brand new to the camp and they already knew each other so it was a lot of different histories coming together.
Paddi Stone: Yeah, it’s kinda like being born into the world and we’re, like, brothers and sister, ‘cause we’re, like, born together out of the same vagina, but we’re all different. We had to learn to love each other and make creativity work among us…
Sondria: How does your individual professionalism add to the overall group success?
Paddi Stone: When I first met INF I kicked him out of my apartment because I thought he was wack…but he had a studio and I thought ‘oh, music’s something I’ve always wanted to do my whole life’ and he just kind of ushered me in like ‘come on, come on little baby’, [then] he was kinda mean to me. It was like some male dominating thing.
I.N.F.: I think my [contribution] is different because I’ve been doing it for a while, I’ve been doing it for like ten years. Your delivery on the microphone, and your breathing, that comes with a lot of experience; I’m like the grandfather.
Kiid Cam: My professionalism has changed a lot since the beginning but I.N.F is the glue. He tells us what to do and what not to do…
I.N.F: …and they still don’t listen
Kiid Cam: …and we still don’t listen, but it doesn’t even matter, ‘cause we’re still killin’.
Paddi Stone: He’s the big brother I never wanted, but the papa I always dreamed of.
Sondria: What experiences have helped shape and mature the group as a whole?
Kiid Cam: Tell ‘em what happened (laughs)
I.N.F: I think just fuckin up, period. But you have to learn from your mistakes. I’ve had
to learn from mines too.
Sondria: What’s next for The Hii Hatts? What do you hope to accomplish?
I.N.F.: Getting signed is always the next step. Getting signed means more things that you get to do.
Paddi Stone: You can have a career.
I.N.F.: I don’t care about the money part of getting signed, getting signed is just good period. You have access to London, you have access to clothing lines, reality shows, etc. The other day they were saying they asked Kid Cudi if he wanted to do a clothing line an he’s like hell naw and I was just boggled by that. I understood that he wanted to be different, but I was just like, you should get a cousin to run it for you or somethin’.
Paddi Stone: When you’re signed, you can be in the public eye and say what you have to say and get your point across.
I.N.F.: Also, we wanna fix the world.
Kiid Cam: We’re tryna change somethin’.
I.N.F: To answer your question, we want to be where everybody else is in the music business, that’s done something special.
The Hii Hatts x The Cool Kids x PacDiv show is on March 5th at the Key Club in Hollywood! Tickets are on sale NOW.
