THE CORNMUFFIN DYNASTY

We the people of the Inland Empire and Oxnard have had brief glimpses of the love that has flowered between Dyna and Brandon (AKA DJ Cornbreeze). Today I’d like to take a microscopic look at how the right love and support can both nurture the calm focus necessary to create, and how it can lay the foundation needed to build up a strong family.

CORNBREEZE’S INDIVIDUAL QUESTIONS:

SONDRIA: As a good amount of Southern California knows, you are a renowned DJ on the Underground Railroad—freeing the people of their musical ignorance. How long have you been spinning? And how and when did you get started?

CORNBREEZE: Wellllllll, I've been spinning for 13+ years now (and counting), I got my start djing back in the day when I first moved to Rialto summer of 1997 (Which is pretty redundant that 1997 is even considered "Back in the Day", I had always been into music ranging from Rock, Funk, Soul, Hip Hop and R&B since the first tape I bought, Which was Another Bad Creation's "Playground" b/w "Iesha" and it changed my life forever. Then one night while I was in the 8th grade without having school the next day, I stayed up late and watched a film called "Beat Street". From then on I knew my life would never be the same. Double K did it for me in that movie, creating such fluid compositions and mixes using only samples on vinyl and other pre-recorded sounds, I automatically related to his character, throw on top of that B-boys, Graffiti, and subtle Mc's here and there, and right then and there, I KNEW what I wanted to be, A Dj.

SONDRIA: With your obvious talents and musical inclinations, has accomplishing what you desire as a disc jockey come fairly easy? If not, what sorts of difficulties have you encountered and how have you overcome them?

CORNBREEZE: Gaining exposure and making people pay attention to the vast styles of music you play has always been easy, having the "STANDARD" tools to secure the business end of being a dj hasn't been easy. Even tho not owning not ONE stitch of dj equipment (Turntables, mixer, speakers) has been probably my biggest chanllenge seeing how the majority of your income is based on these things, I can honestly say that If/When I do get those things, I will have a advantage over ALOT of people because I will have gained the sole appreciation for my craft that some people lack. Also another challenge for me was not having a suitable laptop to dj with, But with the help of some of my closest friends who I can't remember how many times have loaned me their equipment that just sits there dying to be used, I fill a void that has held me down for so long, I guess it's a thing of the past now.

SONDRIA: What’s your goal as a DJ and as creative soul in general? How has being in this relationship helped you work toward this goal with new ferocity?

CORNBREEZE: My goal as a dj has always been to "Play something they either haven't heard before, or haven't heard in the "longest time". Setting myself apart from other guys has never been a issue because I feel the music so much, I dance, I MC, I remix tracks live, I do Mash-ups, and I always try to play requests when I'm not in "The Zone" (Which is a period of time that can last for up to a good 5 hours where I WILL NOT, CAN NOT, and probably SHOULD NOT take requests) Which is something EVERY dj can relate to.

My relationship with Dyna has been completely and utterly inspirational to me and my djing. She uplifts me when I feel like I trainwrecked or F**ked up on a blend, she'll look at me and say "Baby, I bet nobody even noticed, it was DOPE". Just that little observation keep my confidence level at a all time high, Imagine being able to be married to both your craft and the love of your life, and by some chance of fate, your craft doesn't mind just being your sidechick, There's NO greater feeling, Before we began our union I always used to boast about "Djing" being my girlfriend because I could receive ALL the pleasure of being with a woman, completely avoiding ALL the drama that being with a woman comes with. Even before we were together I had always invited her to my dj gigs in LA and for some odd reason, she was never able to make it, So I thought to myself, What better way for her to be able to make it to my gigs then for us to get married and concieve the cutest sonic soul child on the planet!

COUPLE QUESTIONS:

SONDRIA: When/where/how did you two meet?

***THIS IS A TRUE STORY***Well we both met traveling in Croatia back in the summer of '08. I was there catering for the annual Charles Bronson Film festival and he was in the country djing this very same function. Being a huge Charles Bronson fan i was immediately drawn to him when i noticed he had every single soundtrack on vinyl. That initially was the icebreaker for us n' our 10hr converstation that night! The topics ranged from a multitude of things such as: discussions of one another's favorite types of souffles, wine selection, taste in music, the karate kid, politics, theories of who was in fact members of the illuminati, art, underwater basket weaving n' vintage clothing.

SONDRIA: was it love a first sight/chat? If so, describe how you knew this was the one. If not, explain the conflict.

DYNA: Once I discovered how we had countless things in common, over the next week n' 12 wine bottles later. I knew in my heart there was no way i was leaving this country w/ out him.

CORNBREEZE: It definitely was love at first sight. i mean really where else are you going to find a woman who shares the same passion for vigalante/hero films, vintage clothing, and Ralph Macchio. I don't know if it was the wine or the twinkle in her eye that drew me closer to her. all i knew was that some way, some how this woman was going to get into my pants, as my wife.

SONDRIA: You have a “cornmuffin” on the way and an upcoming wedding, how are you preparing yourselves for a life of marital and parental bliss?

Well lemme just say, EVERYTHING has been happening so quickly. We first found out we were pregnant n' took action w/ prenatal matters ASAP. Then we both decided, we don't hate each other n' we respect and love one another. Why not just get married! LOL But on a serious note we decided to just make our union of love official n' since we both don't come from broken homes, it's only fair that our child grows up w/ both parents. So, here we are getting ready for our wedding on the10th of April, out in Vegas at a quaint little Chapel.

SONDRIA: what’s one thing each of you loves about the other that you know you can’t get anywhere else?

DYNA: With Brandon there's quite a few things about him that i can't get anywhere else. One of the main things is, the way he balances me out. He's very loving, generous and thoughtful n' he's definitely a bona fide genuine dude, his friends and peers have nothing but good things to say about him.

CORNBREEZE: Aside from her protective nature, flair for fashion, overall outlook on life and her ability to hold my belly hostage, She is the most beautiful woman this side of the missisippi. Til that day, I had never met a woman with Auburn colored eyes, I know that I could never EVER find another like Dyna, she's truly the honey to my cornbread.

SONDRIA: What’s next for you two? What are you aiming to accomplish by the end of the year? I’d love to see you become California’s new power couple and I believe you each have the loving personalities, impeccable eye for detail, and wide-open creativity to do it.

DYNA: Raising our little one definitely top on our list. We're currently deciding on whether we want to reside in Oxnard (OX) or Rialto (IE). Once that is established we can start the building blocks of starting our family. That's simply all i want accomplished by the end of this year. any of my side projects i have or want to start will just have to wait til next yr.

CORNBREEZE: To be honest a lot our projects and collaborations such as my "My Honey loves It" piece w/ Honey B Gold and Mixtape w/ Chubby Boob are almost upon completion and Dyna's Boujee Attire and Masarap Lumpia businesses has to be put on hold for now as we both have a child to raise with love. We just want our child to experience ALOT of the things we never did when we were being raised.

DYNA’S INDIVIDUAL QUESTIONS:

SONDRIA: We know you can burn in the kitchen, tell us a bit about your catering business and how your love of food began.

DYNA: Some time in October of last year ('09) My sister n' I both out of work, n' her just graduating from college. We got to talking about how we can both make a little side money n' at the same time commerate our mother through continuing her legacy n' start our own filipino catering business. As soon as we put our ideas out on the table n' figured out a business name (Masarap Lumpia) we went to the county n' the city of Oxnard n' got our license. N' we've been busting out lumpias ever since.

My love for food started w/ my parents but mainly my mother (rip) as long as my sister n' I could remember, we always helped mom out in the kitchen. She was a local caterer here in Oxnard's filipino community. Plus my father has a non profit organization called "Pililla Club of America" consisting of ppl from his hometown from Philippines, Pillilia Rizal. Just like any other organization they always either have charity events n' member gatherings n' our whole family would cook or we'd do potlucks. So growing up being around such great cooks n' good food, it was inevitable that i would enjoy cooking too.

SONDRIA: How has being with Brandon inspired you and your creativity?

DYNA: I've always been a creative n' innovative kinda gal. N' I feel anyone can take notice by just simply observing me at a quick glance. From the way i dress, to the music i bump, paintings i put on my walls, n' down to the way i cook. Being w/ him really compliments my way of life n' everything that exudes me. He constantly encourages me to think outta the box n' continue self expression. He's definitely my counterpart in the creativity department.

There it is, readers. When you decide to love--do it hard and do it with everything you've got.

Love & Water,

Sondria
